How-To

How-To | Invest in Your Closet

There are three types of shoppers in the world: impulse buyers, buyers who over-think, and some of us who fall right in-between (aka me.)

My biggest challenge when shopping is buying something just because everyone else is buying it. I always have to stop and ask myself if I really love something or if I am just buying it to keep up with the It Crowd. I’ve found the easiest way to avoid being a copycat is to think of three completely different outfits I can wear the item with.

That brings us here: five items I’ve had no regrets in buying. Take out the “buying just because” or talking yourself out of purchasing an item you truly love. Your closet needs these five essentials– classic items that will be worn multiple times and multiple ways. And remember, you get what you pay for. So splurging on a few versatile pieces is a valuable investment. Your wardrobe will thank you!

  1. Killer Pair of Jeans

Whatever your style, investing in good denim is priceless. Boyfriend, flare, or skinny– you can’t go wrong. Finding that perfect pair of jeans that fit you to a “T” can definitely be a challenge, but will be well worth it in the end. Trust me. And once you find that brand or style that fits your bangin’ bod, buy multiple; different washes, different distressing, whatever. I’m telling you, once you find your Holy Grail of denim, don’t ever turn your back on it. Buy more.

2. Little Black Dress

It sounds cliché, but you really do need an LBD. Again, whatever style or shape fits you best, but my suggestion is something a-line in a lightweight fabric. A-line dresses are multi-functional– they can be casual with your favorite sandals, or dressed up with some heels. LBDs are a day to night, from work to girl’s night out, kind of dress.

3. Booties

Depending on what color variations you wear most often, black or brown booties are a staple. If your wardrobe tends to have more tan, beige, taupe, navy, or pastel, brown booties are the way to go. An all-black (*raises hand), white, or mostly gray closet means black booties are your new BFFs. Comfort plays a huge part in how much you will wear something. Even if you think it doesn’t, it truly does. How many times have you bought shoes because they were “sooooo cute” but never wear them because you need to be in a permanent sitting position to actually enjoy them? Yeah, me too. Heel height is a big deal too, don’t get booties that are hard to walk in (don’t worry, I’m guilty of it too.) Remember comfort is key!

4. Long Sleeve Black Top

I know this is pretty vague, but your style will definitely come into play here. I honestly have around 5 or 6 long sleeve black tops and they are always lifesavers. Get a style that is great by itself or layered under jackets or sweaters. Blousier tops are harder to layer, so keep that in mind. I tend to gravitate towards tops with cool necklines, but whatever your preference is will be great!

5. Denim Jacket

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: denim jackets are a MUST. First things first, find a wash and fit you like. Oversized, fitted, cropped? Light wash, dark wash, distressed? You’ll know what you like when you see it. My biggest piece of advice to finding the perfect denim jacket is to hit up your local second-hand or vintage shops. Vintage denim jackets have my heart. Plus, they’re a lot cheaper than a brand spankin’ new one!

Next time you’re out shopping or cruising around your favorite online stores, keep in mind the things your wardrobe is lacking. Hopefully you’ll hear my voice saying “Buy the shoes, you NEED them!”
